Saatchi Gallery is known for their help with new artists and emerging ones. Their latest attempt was an open submission through their website for your work to be selected and displayed in a 28" screen in the 2nd floor of Saatchi Gallery . Finally , they selected 279 works and one of them was one of my paintings.

I was never really fond of photography as a fine art medium . It just doesn't do what I want it to do. It's my problem. I have always wanted to address this "issue" in my work and now that university is off for summer , I'm discovering photography all over again. I really despise all the technical aspects of hi-end photography but truly admire how simple and fast it developed to be. You can take photographs from your mobile phone in less than a second and then share it with the virtual world for everyone to see it. I understand the gap between physical and digital representation but today , as a young artist , technology has become a hobby where photographs are the dominant language. Internet's fast and simple approach helps me to discover the strengths of photography.
The above photo was taken with an underwater camera and then applied an effect and a crop template from an application on smartphones. Easy , digital and fast. It is interesting how small and cliche these kind of photographs are becoming.

My final piece for this year's assessment was another big painting. It is on paper , with oil pastels , oil paint , acrylic paint and graphite . I wanted to create a big and intimidating face and I knew that I wanted it to be colourful. But, with my paintings I can't plan them from before and I just cope while going. Once again , however not intended , it doesn't look happy even with all the colours.
I named it "I am a happy giant" as if the face is introducing itself and it has a particular personalisation quality that I like . It's like I am talking to the viewer. As I said it doesn't look happy so I'm lying in the title .
For a placement module , I ended up helping in Cambridge in an artist run space called Aid & Abet.
I knew nothing about these kind of spaces and my tutor David Kefford (co-founder of the space) really helped me and taught me many things about what was going on, in general. I was surprised about the art world that was going on in Cambridge and how much preparation a show must go through.
It a huge space next to the Cambridge Train Station , and it holds exhibitions quite often. It is open on Thursdays and Weekends , so I believe it's pretty accessible and anyone near it should visit. During my time there , I've met a lot of artists and arty people and we had very interesting (and insightful) conversations. For my part , I learned and enjoyed it a lot , for their part , I don't think so much because I distracted them too much .
My personal opinion about projectors: they have limitless possibilities for installations.
I wanted to create a humanised machine. One of my main influences (and passion) is Cinema and Sci-Fi , I believe, is the foundation of how Cinema evolved through the years. The first films were Sci-Fi ( if they are ever to be categorised) and generally there is a "hunger" about people wanting to go out of Earth and meeting aliens.
Just for the sake of it , I wanted to do a photo shooting, dressed as a woman. Due to my body and face , I could not be feminine so we went with the "trans" theme. It was interesting and we produced around 500 photos . I'm using "we" because a friend of mine took the photos and that was the "problem" with these: I was not the one taking the photos and the results were not as expected.
Is not about being selfish , or disliking the work of others but I believe that one of the elements in my work is the personalisation I'm allowing to happen . With me absent from the framing of the shots I couldn't have that. I'm glad I tried that anyway and now I know even more about how I want to proceed with my work.
It is not always about the technical excellence of a piece or it's budget. That was defines art from design , in my opinion. I'm disappointed actually, when the opposite happens.
I would like this video to act as a video , as an installation , as a projection , as an eye trick , as a multiple layer piece. That is why is so fake and so subtle . At least , I tried to make it be.

There is always a time when I feel overwhelmed by everything. That I am above everything , taht I have the power of the world , that I can make the unaccomplished, doable. Is when you feel so confident that you dare to invite the other to "stop you".
Melodrama , addiction and ego are themes that were not intended in the first place but welcomed in the process.
